Wandering the aisle of the supermarket can be a confusing experience when you’re focused on healthy eating. It can be hard to keep track of the latest health news on which foods are in and which are out. And it gets even harder as the holidays roll around and the temptation and abundance of treats increases.
But when you’re diabetic, reading nutritional labels and choosing the best foods for you moves from being a good exercise in healthy living to a requirement. But what do the fat grams and fiber count and sugar tallies on the labels really mean and how do you use all that info to make a good decision?
That’s why Leslie Crawford, RDLD, is taking a field trip. Crawford, a diabetes educator and nutrition counselor at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford, wants to make nutrition labels easier for people to digest. She will lead an event at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Market Street in Colleyville (5605 Colleyville Blvd.).
The event will offer cooking instructions, recipes, tours of the store to read labels, and information about local diabetes support groups.
