Bedford resident named Great 100 nurse

Gail Potter, R.N., is no stranger to the profession of nursing. She’s spent 45 years as a nurse.

The Bedford resident has been named to the annual list of the Metroplex’s Great 100 Nurses, which is sponsored by the Texas Nurses Association and the North Texas Organization of Nurse Executives. The awards honor registered nurses in the D/FW area who exemplify excellence in the art and science of nursing. Nurses are nominated by their peers, and may only be named to the list once in their career.

Potter recalls what drew her into nursing.

“My sister was in nursing school and as I watched her learn and grow into a nurse I knew that’s where I wanted to be,” she said.

Potter is a clinical educator at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford. Her coworkers and hospital leaders agree that Potter has found her calling.

“The Great 100 Nurses are the best of the best,” said Deborah Paganelli, FACHE, hospital president. “Our nurses set a high standard for each other, an example of excellence that is made up of hard work and dedication for every patient, every day. I am proud that their work was recognized among the best in our region.”

Potter is one that easily adapts to whatever the situation requires. Potter has been responsible for developing, coordinating and leading classes and orientation programs. Although she has semi-retired, Potter is still quick to pitch in whenever she is needed.

“No matter the role, you knew she would give it her all to do a good job for the patient and the department,” one nominator wrote. “Seeing the best in others is second nature to her. When you are feeling low you can count on her to comment on something beautiful about you.”
