Sharon Winn, R.N., is one of those people that will take on any task and make it her own.
The Colleyville resident has been named to the annual list of the Metroplex’s Great 100 Nurses, which is sponsored by the Texas Nurses Association and the North Texas Organization of Nurse Executives. The awards honor registered nurses in the D/FW area who exemplify excellence in the art and science of nursing. Nurses are nominated by their peers, and may only be named to the list once in their career.
Winn recalls what drew her into nursing.
“The inspiration to become a nurse came to me after my husband had knee surgery,” she said. “The idea of making a difference in someone’s life inspired me; the ability to combine all those skills into one profession excited me. It’s a privilege to serve others and I hope it’s the small things I do that make the difference.”
Winn currently works in Women’s Services at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford. Her coworkers and hospital leaders agree that Winn has found her niche.
“The Great 100 Nurses are the best of the best,” said Deborah Paganelli, FACHE, hospital president. “Our nurses set a high standard for each other, an example of excellence that is made up of hard work and dedication for every patient, every day. I am proud that their work was recognized among the best in our region.”
Winn has been instrumental in Texas Health HEB’s switch to couplet care for mothers and babies, which marked a huge shift from the older model of one nurse caring for the mother and another for the baby. Winn helped rally the nurses and helped train them on this new model of care, even coming in on her days off to develop training materials. Outside of work she is passionate about helping those in need and has participated in mission trips and leads the Relay for Life project for the unit each year.
She’s not just a caregiver for strangers. For the last six years she has been caring for her mother-in-law. “My family is my life and I want my patients to feel like my family, just as my co-workers do,” Winn said.
“Without assistance from this staff nurse, the transition may not have been as successful,” one nominator wrote. “I see the most joy in her face when she is doing for others.”
